Things to Do Near Kigo on Lake Victoria, Kampala

From golf and spa days at the lakeside championship resort to boat trips on Lake Victoria, Munyonyo cathedral visits, Equator stops, and quiet evenings in Kigo — the complete activity guide for guests staying in Kampala's lakeside luxury enclave.

The single best argument for staying in Kigo rather than central Kampala is the activity radius. Within half an hour of a Kigo address you can play eighteen holes of championship golf, board a boat for the equator islands, visit a Martyrs Shrine, or walk under hundred-year-old trees in the Entebbe Botanical Gardens.

This is the guide to everything within reach, ordered by how far you have to travel to get to it — starting with what is on the other side of the fence.

What is within walking distance of HMK Living?

Three things, which is unusual for a residential neighbourhood: the championship golf course, the Wellness Sanctuary spa, and the restaurant on the ground floor of the building. HMK Living sits on Kigo Road in Wakiso District directly adjacent to the Lake Victoria championship golf resort, with the spa next door.

That means a full day is available without a car. Breakfast downstairs, a morning round next door, lunch, a treatment in the afternoon, dinner back in the restaurant or sent up by room service.

It is worth knowing what is not here, too. Kigo is residential rather than commercial, so there is no strip of bars and shops within walking distance. For evening range you drive — Munyonyo is ten minutes, central Kampala about 25.

What is on the championship resort itself?

The resort next door is the anchor of the neighbourhood, and most Kigo stays route through it for at least one activity. It is open to visitors who are not staying there, booked through its own reservations team or, more easily, through your concierge.

  • The 18-hole championship golf course — the only championship-grade course in greater Kampala, with a pro shop, club hire and caddies.
  • The spa wing — massage suites, hammam, steam and sauna, inside the resort and distinct from the Wellness Sanctuary next to HMK Living.
  • The resort pool deck — the resort's calling card, with the lake on the horizon. Note that HMK Living itself has no pool; this one belongs to the resort.
  • Two restaurants and a bar — all-day dining and a waterfront grill, plus light dining by the water.
  • Padel courts — a recent addition, near the spa wing.
  • The water-sports jetty — the launch point for resort-organised lake excursions.

If you are staying at HMK Living, the WhatsApp concierge on +256 748 390 401 handles these bookings so you are not calling across the fence yourself. Golf is included from Gold tier upwards, which is the default on the 2BHK Suite and the Penthouse — the detail is in our golf and stay guide.

How do you get out onto Lake Victoria from Kigo?

By boat from the resort jetty, or from Munyonyo ten minutes up the road. Those two launch points cover every water activity worth doing on this stretch of shoreline, and all of them are bookable through the concierge rather than negotiated at the water.

  1. Sunset cruises from Munyonyo. Forty-five minutes to an hour and a quarter on a private boat, usually with bar service. The simplest good evening available here, and the one that converts sceptics.
  2. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. A 45-minute boat ride to a small island where rescued chimpanzees live in semi-wild conditions. Half-day visits include the transfer, entry and a structured viewing session. Visitor numbers are capped — book 48 hours ahead.
  3. Fishing charters. Lake Victoria is famed for Nile perch, with tilapia the more frequent catch. Half-day charters leave from Munyonyo and the resort jetty. Carry sunscreen; you will be an hour from shade.
  4. Mabamba Bay shoebill swamp. A drive of about 90 minutes plus half an hour in a small boat through papyrus reeds, for the most reliable shoebill stork sighting near Kampala. Dawn start, guide essential.

One honest caveat about the lake: it makes its own weather, and afternoon storms build quickly. A good operator will postpone, and a postponed departure is a sign of competence rather than a ruined day.

A second caveat about swimming. Open-water swimming off an unmanaged shoreline is not advisable because of bilharzia, carried by freshwater snails in still water. Stay in managed water, or stay in the boat.

What is within twenty minutes by road?

Munyonyo, essentially, and it is worth an afternoon on its own. The drive is about ten minutes from Kigo, and three stops there make a straightforward half-day.

Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine

A handsome modern Catholic basilica completed in 2015, on the site where the first Uganda Martyrs were killed in 1886. Open daily, no entry fee, modest dress requested. Weekdays are quiet and contemplative; Sunday Mass is a louder and entirely different experience.

The Munyonyo waterfront

Beyond the resorts, the lakefront has a small marina, casual lakeside restaurants and the boat operators. Best an hour before sunset, when the light is doing the work.

The resort gardens at Munyonyo

The manicured gardens there are open for an afternoon walk, and tea on a terrace over the lake is a low-effort, high-payoff plan for a day with nothing else in it.

The Wellness Sanctuary

Directly next door to HMK Living rather than in Munyonyo, but it belongs on any list of what to actually do here. It is smaller and more private than the resort spa wing, day passes are available, and guests book it from the apartment. There is a wider survey in our Kampala spa guide.

What is worth a half-day trip, 30 to 45 minutes out?

Four things, in roughly descending order of how often guests ask for them: the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, the Equator monument, the Wildlife Conservation Education Centre and Mabamba Bay. All four are easy from Kigo because the Entebbe Express Highway runs past the door.

Entebbe Botanical Gardens

About forty minutes down the Express Highway. Forty hectares of mature trees and lakeshore paths, established in 1898, with a confident population of vervet monkeys. Mornings are best for birds and for shade.

The Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre

Next to the Botanical Gardens, and better than its old nickname as the Entebbe zoo suggests. A serious conservation centre with rescued lions, white rhinos, cheetahs and a chimpanzee enclosure. The behind-the-scenes tours are the reason to book ahead rather than turn up.

The Equator monument at Kayabwe

Roughly forty minutes south of Kigo on the Kampala–Masaka road. The crossing point of the equator, with the obligatory one-foot-in-each-hemisphere photograph, a craft market and surprisingly good coffee on the line itself. Touristy in the polite sense, and worth an hour.

Mabamba Bay

An hour or so by road plus a small boat through the reeds, and the best shoebill site within reach of Kampala. Go at dawn, go with a guide, and do not attempt it unguided.

Where do you eat in the evening in Kigo?

In the building, at the resort next door, or ten minutes away in Munyonyo. Kigo's evening options are good rather than numerous, which is the honest trade for a quiet, residential address.

The ground-floor restaurant at HMK Living serves breakfast — included with every stay — and then lunch and dinner à la carte from the same kitchen. The menu runs to grills, curries, pizza, pasta and salads, with coffee and fresh juice, and room service will bring any dish up to the apartment.

The resort next door has all-day dining and a waterfront grill, which is the right answer for a long table and a glass of wine over the water. Munyonyo adds several more restaurants ten minutes up the road.

For a proper night out with range to it, you are driving to Kololo or Nakasero, 25 to 30 minutes each way. Many guests do it once in a week and are content with the shoreline for the rest.

How do you put a three-day Kigo itinerary together?

Front-load the activities and leave the last evening empty. Most guests overbook the first day after a long flight and underbook the last, when they finally want to sit still.

Day one — arrival. Land at Entebbe and drive the 20 km up the Express Highway to Kigo. Check in, eat, and do nothing ambitious. If you have energy left, an hour on the practice range or a short walk is plenty.

Day two — the big day. Either eighteen holes on the championship course from a 06:30 tee time, or the half-day boat to Ngamba Island. Afternoon at the Wellness Sanctuary. Evening on the Munyonyo waterfront for sunset, dinner over the water.

Day three — the far trip. Mabamba Bay at dawn for the shoebill, or the Botanical Gardens and the Wildlife Conservation Education Centre as a gentler pairing. The Equator monument on the way back if you have an hour. Quiet dinner in the apartment.

If you have a fourth day, use it for twilight golf and a slow morning. That is the day most guests remember.

The concierge will sequence and book any of this, including the small logistics that make or break an early start — a packed breakfast before a dawn departure, a driver confirmed the night before, a chilled bottle waiting after a long day on the water.

Which apartment suits an activity-led stay?

A Studio Deluxe or 1BHK Suite is enough if you are out most of the day; a 2BHK Suite or the Penthouse earns its rate when you are a family or a group and want a kitchen and separate bedrooms. The split is about who is with you, not how much you plan to do.

ApartmentFromSizeBeds and bathsKitchen
Studio Deluxe$105From 32 m²1 queenKitchenette
1BHK Suite$115From 52 m²1 kingKitchenette
2BHK Suite$200From 88 m²2 kings, 2 bathsFully stocked
3BHK Penthouse$300From 180 m²3 kings, 3 bathsFully stocked

Two details matter for a trip built around activities. The Studio Deluxe and the 1BHK Suite have a kitchenette — kettle, microwave, fridge — which covers coffee before a dawn start; a fully stocked kitchen comes with the 2BHK Suite and the Penthouse.

The second is the activity tiers. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum sit behind the apartments, golf is included from Gold upwards, and the Penthouse is Platinum by default with the chauffeur, golf and spa folded in. Details on the services page, rates on the pricing page.

Practical notes for moving around Kigo

Use a driver, carry some cash in shillings, and pack a light rain shell whatever the season. Those three things cover most of what goes wrong on a Kigo itinerary.

  • Drivers. Self-drive is not recommended for a short stay. A pre-booked driver through the concierge, or the chauffeur service included at Platinum tier, is faster and calmer than a hire car in Kampala traffic.
  • Weather. Kigo is on the lake, so showers blow through quickly and the sun is strong between them. A rain shell and a hat live in the same bag.
  • Cash. Resorts and major attractions take cards and dollars. The craft market at the equator and the boat guides at Mabamba want small shilling notes.
  • Timing. Equator photographs are best mid-morning. Boats are best at either end of the day. Golf is best early or at twilight.
  • Security. There is 24/7 armed security on site at HMK Living and a 24/7 concierge, so late arrivals and early departures are routine rather than a favour.
  • Laundry. Laundry runs as a service, which is what makes a three-day activity itinerary possible out of a small suitcase. There are no washing machines in the apartments.

The radius, summarised

Everything on this list is within about an hour of one address on Kigo Road. Golf and the spa are on the other side of the fence, the lake is at the end of the garden, Entebbe and its gardens are forty minutes one way, and central Kampala is about 25 minutes the other.

That is the whole case for Kigo as a base rather than a stop. You are not choosing between the city and the lake, or between the airport and everything else — you are sitting between them, which is why guests who come for two nights tend to extend.

Stays of seven nights or more attract a 10 to 20% discount, which is worth knowing if your list is longer than your calendar. The neighbourhood detail is on the area guide, and the wider comparison with the city is in Kigo against Nakasero.
