Golf + Stay Packages Near Kampala: Lake Victoria Championship Course Guide
Everything a visiting golfer needs to know about the Lake Victoria championship golf course in Kigo — Kampala's premier 18-hole championship golf course. Course profile, green fees, stay-and-play packages, and why Kigo has become Uganda's golf-stay capital.

If you are a golfer travelling to East Africa, the question of whether there is serious golf in Uganda has a one-word answer: Kigo. The Lake Victoria championship golf course is the country's premier 18-hole championship layout, and the small lakeside district around it has become Uganda's golf-stay capital as a result.
This is the practical playbook for the visiting golfer: what the course is, how to pay for it, where to sleep, when to tee off, and how to build four days around it without spending half of them in a car.
How close is the golf course to HMK Living?
The course is next door. HMK Living sits on Kigo Road directly adjacent to the Lake Victoria championship golf resort, which means the walk from your apartment door to the pro shop is a short one and the drive is a matter of a couple of minutes.
That adjacency is the whole reason this article exists. In most golf destinations the trade-off is between sleeping on the resort and sleeping somewhere with a kitchen, a proper desk and more floor space. In Kigo you do not have to choose, because the apartment building and the first tee share a boundary.
The second piece of geography that matters is the airport. Kigo is roughly 20 km from Entebbe International Airport along the Entebbe Express Highway, and about 25 minutes from central Kampala in the other direction. A golfer on a morning arrival can check in, eat, and still make an afternoon range session.
What are you actually playing?
The Lake Victoria championship course is an 18-hole, par-72 championship layout that runs along the Lake Victoria shoreline. It plays to roughly 6,800 yards from the championship tees, around 6,200 from the regular tees and 5,400 from the forward tees, so it can be set up as a test or as a pleasant walk depending on which markers you choose.
The course profile in brief:
- Front nine — opens with three demanding par-4s, then eases at the short par-5 fifth, which most players can reach in two.
- Back nine — carries the signature hole, the par-3 sixteenth, played downhill towards the lake with water framing the green.
- Hazards — Lake Victoria is in play on four holes. Elsewhere the defence is mature acacia, well-placed bunkers and wind off the water rather than dramatic elevation.
- Greens — Bermuda grass. They run quick and true in the morning and get grainier through the afternoon as the light lengthens.
Strong amateurs will find the championship tees worth the walk. Recreational players should take the forward tees without apology, because the wind off the lake adds a club more often than the scorecard suggests.

How do green fees and stay-and-play packages compare?
There are two ways to pay for golf in Kigo: round by round at the pro shop, or bundled into your apartment rate through an activity tier. Which is cheaper depends almost entirely on how many rounds you intend to play.
Paying the pro shop directly
Green fees are published by the resort pro shop and move with the day and the tee time. Weekend mornings sit at the top of the range, weekday twilight at the bottom, and a resort guest pays less than a walk-up visitor.
Club hire and caddies are charged separately, per round, at the counter. That matters for the arithmetic: a traveller who flies without clubs and takes a caddy is paying three line items every time they play, not one.
Book tee times at least 48 hours ahead for a weekend. Weekday mornings will often take a same-day booking, and the concierge can check for you before you commit to a plan.
Booking an activity tier instead
HMK Living runs four activity tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Championship golf access is included from Gold upwards, for the length of the stay rather than per round, and the Penthouse sits on Platinum by default with a chauffeur and the spa next door folded in.
The practical effect is that a Gold or Platinum guest never visits the pro shop till. The concierge books the tee time, the caddy and club hire if you need it, and the round appears on your schedule rather than on a bill.
| Your stay | Rounds planned | The cheaper way to do it |
|---|---|---|
| 2 nights, one round | 1 | Studio Deluxe at $105 a night, green fee paid at the pro shop |
| 3 nights, two rounds | 2 | 1BHK Suite at $115 a night, or a Gold-tier upgrade — close to level |
| 4+ nights, three or more rounds | 3+ | 2BHK Suite at $200 a night on Gold tier, golf included |
| Group of four to six, long weekend | varies | 3BHK Penthouse at $300 a night on Platinum tier |
Two rounds in a stay is roughly the tipping point. Three makes the tier obviously cheaper, and the gap widens further if two of you are playing from the same apartment.
Which apartment should a golfer book?
Book on how many of you there are and whether you want to cook. A solo golfer is well served by the Studio Deluxe; a pair who want a separate sitting room take the 1BHK Suite; four or six golfers travelling together should look at the 2BHK Suite or the Penthouse, where the kitchens are full rather than kitchenette.
| Apartment | From | Size | Beds and baths | Kitchen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio Deluxe | $105 | From 32 m² | 1 queen | Kitchenette |
| 1BHK Suite | $115 | From 52 m² | 1 king | Kitchenette |
| 2BHK Suite | $200 | From 88 m² | 2 kings, 2 baths | Fully stocked |
| 3BHK Penthouse | $300 | From 180 m² | 3 kings, 3 baths | Fully stocked |
Be clear about the kitchen distinction before you book, because golfers plan food around tee times. The Studio Deluxe and the 1BHK Suite have a kitchenette — kettle, microwave, fridge — which is enough for coffee at half past five in the morning and a cold drink after the round. Cooking a proper meal needs the 2BHK or the Penthouse.
Everything else travels across all four: fibre-optic mesh Wi-Fi throughout the building, a work desk in every apartment, a 55-inch QLED television, premium linen, daily housekeeping and laundry as a service. Breakfast is included with every stay. The full rate card is on the pricing page.
What time should you tee off in Kigo?
Early, if you can. A 06:30 tee time gives you cool air, light wind and an empty course, and a sharp pair will be through nine in about ninety minutes.
Twilight is the other good answer. From around 15:30 the course empties, the fee drops, and the light coming off the lake is the best of the day. If you keep moving you will finish eighteen.
Late morning on a weekend is the one window to avoid. The course fills, the equatorial sun sits overhead, and pace of play slows to the point where the round stops being enjoyable.
A note on the equator that catches first-time visitors out: Kigo is almost on it, so there is no long golden evening. Light goes quickly after sunset, year round. Plan your last nine to finish with half an hour in hand, not five minutes.
What should you pack for a golf trip to Uganda?
Pack for strong sun, warm rain and a short walk between the apartment and the clubhouse. The one thing worth carrying from home is your glove, because the fit matters more than the brand.
- Shoes — soft-spike or spikeless. Paths are well kept, so a sneaker-style golf shoe is plenty.
- Two caps — the equatorial sun is harsher than the temperature suggests at this altitude.
- High-factor sunscreen — reapply at the turn, not at the end.
- Polos, shorts or slacks — no denim on the course.
- A light rain shell — for the afternoon storm in the shoulder seasons.
- Your own glove — the pro shop has spares, yours will fit better.
- Clubs, only if you want to — the pro shop rents good sets, and flying with a travel bag is a real cost in time and money.
Leave laundry out of your packing maths. HMK Living runs laundry as a service, so three days of golf shirts does not need three days of shirts in the suitcase. There are no washing machines in the apartments; housekeeping handles it.
A worked example: four nights, three rounds
Here is how a four-night golf trip actually sequences when the course is next door. This is the itinerary the concierge builds most often, and the shape of it is the argument for staying in Kigo rather than in town.
Day one — arrival. Land at Entebbe, 20 km up the Express Highway to Kigo, check in. Late lunch in the ground-floor restaurant, then an hour on the practice range to shake the flight out of your hands. Early dinner, early night.
Day two — the first full round. Breakfast downstairs at six. A 06:30 tee time, eighteen holes, back before the heat. Lunch, then a treatment at the Wellness Sanctuary next door, which is the single best thing you can do for a back that has just carried a round. Dinner from the à la carte menu, or sent up by room service.
Day three — the second round and the lake. Play a different set of tees for a different course. Afternoon on the water: Munyonyo is ten minutes away and sunset boats leave from there. Dinner late.
Day four — twilight golf. Keep the morning slow: breakfast, errands in town if you need them, packing. Tee off around 15:00 and finish in the best light of the trip.
Day five — departure. Breakfast, and back down the Express Highway. If your flight is in the evening, the concierge will hold a late check-out so you are not sitting in a lobby.
Three rounds across four nights puts you firmly in tier territory. Priced round by round, the same trip carries three green fees, three caddies and possibly three sets of club hire.

What do you eat around a round of golf?
Breakfast is included with every stay and served in the ground-floor restaurant, which is the part of the arrangement golfers notice most. A 06:30 tee time and a breakfast you do not have to drive to is a better start than any package inclusion.
Lunch and dinner are à la carte from the same kitchen. The menu runs to grills, curries, pizza, pasta and salads, with coffee and fresh juice, and room service will bring any of it up to the apartment — which is what you want on the evening of a thirty-six-hole day.
A practical pattern for golfers: order the grill at lunch when you are hungry and the afternoon is free, and keep dinner lighter. Do the reverse and the second round of a back-to-back day will feel heavier than it should.
If you are in a 2BHK Suite or the Penthouse, the stocked kitchen earns its keep on the small things rather than the big ones. Eggs before a dawn tee time, cold drinks waiting after, fruit in the fridge for the turn.

How does a buddies trip of four or six work?
Book one apartment rather than four rooms. A 2BHK Suite takes four across two king bedrooms and two bathrooms; the 3BHK Penthouse takes six across three king bedrooms and three bathrooms on the top floor, with a full kitchen and the space to sit around after dinner.
That single change fixes most of what makes group golf trips tiresome. There is one booking, one bill, one chauffeur run to the first tee instead of four taxis, and one living room for the post-round argument about the sixteenth.
The Penthouse is Platinum tier by default, which bundles the chauffeur, the golf and the spa. For a long weekend where everyone plays every day, that is the configuration that keeps the trip simple. There is more on the format in our guide to the Penthouse against the suites.
One scheduling note for groups: book tee times for the whole party in a single call through the concierge rather than individually. Two four-balls going out back to back is a different trip from six players scattered across a morning.

What about the weather and the rainy seasons?
Expect warm, bright mornings and the possibility of a fast afternoon storm from March to May and September to November. Rain here arrives hard and leaves quickly rather than settling in for a day.
Morning rounds are the hedge. If a storm does come through mid-round, the clubhouse approach is unexcitable: pause, wait it out — usually half an hour to forty-five minutes — then resume when the course staff signal.
The sun is the underrated risk, not the rain. Lake Victoria sits on the equator, so at noon the sun is directly overhead and burns faster than the pleasant 24 to 28°C air temperature implies.
How do you get from the airport to the first tee?
By road, 20 km up the Entebbe Express Highway from Entebbe International Airport. Ask the concierge to arrange the transfer when you book, and the car will be waiting rather than negotiated for at arrivals.
Do not plan to self-drive for a short golf trip. Between unfamiliar junctions, Kampala traffic patterns and clubs in the boot, a pre-booked driver is both faster and cheaper than the alternative once you count the stress.

How to book a golf-led stay
Start with the number of rounds, then pick the apartment. One or two rounds: book a Studio Deluxe or 1BHK Suite and pay the pro shop. Three or more, or a group: book a 2BHK Suite or the Penthouse and let the tier carry the golf.
Then let the concierge do the sequencing. Tee times, caddies, club hire, the spa slot after the round, the boat on the lake for the afternoon someone does not want to play — all of it is one conversation on WhatsApp rather than five phone calls across two properties.
The Lake Victoria championship course is not pretending to be St Andrews. It is its own thing: a serious par-72 layout on the shoreline of the second-largest freshwater lake on earth, played in equatorial light, finished with dinner downstairs and a bed you can walk to. For a visiting golfer, that combination is rarer than it sounds.
