A First-Timer's Guide to Getting from Entebbe Airport to Kigo
Landing at Entebbe for the first time? Kigo is about 20 km from Entebbe International Airport via the Entebbe Express Highway. Here is how the journey works, how to arrange a transfer before you fly, what to have ready when you land, and what to expect on arrival.

Most visitors to Kigo arrive through Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's main international gateway on the Lake Victoria shoreline. The good news for a first-timer is that Kigo is one of the easiest addresses around Kampala to reach from the airport, and the journey does not involve the city at all.
This guide covers the whole arrival: the distance, the route, how to arrange a transfer before you fly, what to do if you have not, what to have ready when you land, and what happens once you reach Kigo.
How far is Kigo from Entebbe Airport?
Kigo is about 20 km from Entebbe International Airport by road. The route follows the Entebbe Express Highway, a modern dual carriageway that bypasses central Kampala entirely, so there is no city traffic between the runway and the lake.
That matters more than the number suggests. Before the expressway, every arrival into greater Kampala shared the same congested road, and journey times were unpredictable enough that travellers padded their itineraries around them. The expressway removed that variable for anyone heading to the Kigo side of the city.
Kigo itself sits on Kigo Road in Wakiso District, with frontage onto Murchison Bay on Lake Victoria. It is between Munyonyo and Entebbe, and roughly 25 minutes from central Kampala — in the opposite direction from the airport, which is the whole point of the address.

What does the drive actually look like?
You leave the airport perimeter, join the expressway, and stay on it. There are no turns to worry about, no city centre to cross, and no market streets to negotiate.
The road runs north along the Lake Victoria shoreline with water visible in stretches, through farmland and the fringes of lakeside settlements. At night it is lit and quiet. In daylight it is one of the more pleasant arrival drives in the region, which is not something many airport runs can claim.
The exit for Kigo brings you onto Kigo Road and into a residential neighbourhood: walled compounds, trees, the championship golf course on one side, and the lake at the end of the road. The change in soundscape is noticeable within a minute of leaving the highway.
How do you get through Entebbe Airport?
Expect the standard sequence: immigration, baggage reclaim, customs, then the arrivals hall. Entebbe is a single-terminal airport, so there is no inter-terminal transfer and nothing complicated about finding the exit.
Two things are worth settling before you fly rather than in the queue. First, entry permission — requirements depend on your nationality and change from time to time, and most visitors now apply online in advance through Uganda's official immigration portal rather than at the desk. Second, health documentation: travellers to Uganda are commonly asked for a yellow fever vaccination certificate, so check the current position and carry the card.
In the arrivals hall you will find currency exchange, SIM-card vendors and a line of drivers. Change a modest amount into Uganda shillings for incidentals; card acceptance is reliable at HMK Living and the resorts around Kigo, less so at roadside stops along the way.
If you want a local SIM, buy it at the airport rather than later. Uganda requires SIM registration against identity documents, so have your passport out when you buy one.
Option 1: a transfer arranged before you fly
The simplest arrival is a transfer booked before you travel, because it removes every decision from the moment you are least equipped to make one. HMK Living guests can arrange a chauffeured transfer on the HMK Living fleet through the WhatsApp concierge on +256 748 390 401.
Send three things: your flight number, your scheduled arrival time and the number of passengers and bags. The transfer is then timed to your landing rather than to a clock, which means a delayed flight does not leave a car idling or a guest stranded.
A dedicated chauffeur is included on the Platinum activity tier, which the 3BHK Penthouse carries by default. On the other tiers the transfer is arranged as a service — the pricing page sets out what Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum each cover.
Practical note for late arrivals: tell the concierge if you are landing after midnight. The guest concierge is on duty 24/7, so a 2am arrival is a normal event rather than a special request, but it is easier for everyone when it is expected.
Option 2: arranging a ride when you land
If you have not pre-booked, taxis operate from the airport and the journey is straightforward. Agree the fare before you set off rather than at the other end, and keep your destination written down to show the driver.
Write it out in full: HMK Living, Kigo Road, Kigo, Wakiso District. Adding the landmark helps — the Lake Victoria championship golf resort is the reference point every local driver knows, and HMK Living is directly adjacent to it.
Have a small amount of local currency ready for the fare. Agreeing a price and then discovering you have only large foreign notes is the most common friction point of an unplanned arrival.
Option 3: ride-hailing
Ride-hailing apps operate in the Entebbe and Kampala area and can work well, with two caveats worth knowing before you rely on them.
The first is connectivity. You need a working data connection in the arrivals hall to book a ride, which means buying a SIM first or having roaming that works on landing. The second is the pickup point, which at any airport is a designated area rather than the kerb outside the door, and signage is not always obvious at 1am.
For a first visit, a pre-arranged transfer is the better trade. For a second or third visit, ride-hailing is a reasonable option.
Which option should you choose?
For a first visit, choose the pre-arranged transfer. For later visits, any of the three works, and the table below is the short version of why.
| Option | Best for | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-arranged transfer | First visits, late or early arrivals, travelling with family or luggage | Send the flight number in advance so the car tracks the flight |
| Airport taxi | Unplanned arrivals, daytime landings | Agree the fare before departure; have local cash and the address written down |
| Ride-hailing | Repeat visitors who already have a working local SIM | Needs data on landing; the pickup zone is not the terminal kerb |
Self-driving is the fourth option and the one to skip on a first visit. The expressway is simple enough, but local road etiquette and night-time navigation are a poor introduction to a country after a long-haul flight.
What should you have ready before you fly?
Five things, and all of them take minutes to sort out before you leave home rather than hours to fix on arrival.
- Entry documents. Check Uganda's official immigration guidance for your nationality, apply in advance where that applies, and carry a yellow fever certificate if required.
- Your transfer, booked. Message the concierge with your flight number, arrival time, passenger count and bag count.
- The concierge number, saved. Put +256 748 390 401 into WhatsApp before you board. The office line is +256 393 101 080.
- The address, written down. HMK Living, Kigo Road, Kigo, Wakiso District — next to the Lake Victoria championship golf resort.
- Arrival timing. Check-in begins at 3:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Landing earlier? Early arrival can usually be arranged subject to availability, and luggage can be held in the meantime.

What happens when you arrive in Kigo?
You are checked in, taken up to the apartment, and left alone unless you want otherwise. The property sits on the Lake Victoria shoreline beside the championship golf resort, with a Wellness Sanctuary spa next door and 24/7 armed security on site.
The apartment itself is set up for an arrival rather than a tour: premium linen, a 55-inch QLED television, a work desk, fibre-optic mesh Wi-Fi that works from the moment you connect, and daily housekeeping from the next morning.
If you have landed late, room service brings any dish from the ground-floor restaurant kitchen up to the apartment. If you have landed early, breakfast is included with every stay and is served downstairs — grills, pastries, fruit, coffee and fresh juice, from the same kitchen that handles lunch and dinner à la carte.
Laundry is worth handing over on day one if you have arrived off a long flight. It is a service rather than a machine in the apartment, collected and returned, which is the right arrangement for anyone travelling with shirts.

Which apartment should a first-time visitor book?
For one or two travellers on a short first visit, the Studio Deluxe is the straightforward choice at $105 a night. For a longer first stay, or one with calls and work in it, the 1BHK Suite is the better fit at $115 a night.
The Studio Deluxe starts at 32 m² with a queen bed, a writing nook and a kitchenette — a kettle, a microwave and a fridge, which is enough for coffee before an early start.
The 1BHK Suite starts at 52 m² with a king bed and, importantly, a door between the bedroom and the lounge. It also has a kitchenette rather than a full kitchen; fully stocked kitchens are in the larger two types.
If you are arriving as a family or a pair of couples, the 2BHK Suite at $200 a night gives you 88 m², two king bedrooms, two bathrooms and a fully stocked kitchen. The 3BHK Penthouse at $300 a night is 180 m² on the top floor with three kings, three baths and Platinum tier, which is where the chauffeur, golf and spa come included.
One more thing worth knowing at booking: stays of seven nights or more attract a discount of 10 to 20 per cent, with long-stay rates beyond that. If your first visit is shaping up to be a week or longer, ask the concierge before you confirm.
Is Kigo a good base for a first visit to Uganda?
For most first visits, yes — particularly if your trip includes the lake, golf or onward travel by air. It is about 20 km from the airport and roughly 25 minutes from central Kampala, which makes it a workable base for both.
The case against is specific rather than general. If your trip is built around city-centre evenings and you want restaurants within walking distance, Kigo is residential and will feel quiet. Kololo or Nakasero suits that trip better.
If your trip is built around the lake, the golf course next door, the spa, or a mix of work and rest, Kigo is the stronger base. The area info page sets out the distances, and things to do near Kigo covers what is within reach.
What about the return journey?
The return is the same 20 km in reverse, and the same fleet handles it. Tell the concierge your departure flight when you check in rather than the night before, so the timing can be built around check-out at 11:00 AM.
Because the expressway avoids central Kampala, the departure run is unusually predictable for the region. That is worth remembering when you are deciding how much buffer to leave before an international flight.
If your flight is late in the day, ask about a late check-out or about holding luggage while you use the morning — a spa hour next door or nine holes on the championship course are both within walking distance.

First-timer questions, answered briefly
