Where to Stay Before an Early Morning Flight Out of Entebbe

A practical guide to sleeping somewhere sensible before a dawn departure from Entebbe International — how early you actually need to leave, what the road is like at four in the morning, what to ask a property before you book, and why Kigo works better than it looks on a map.

Almost every long-haul route out of Entebbe leaves in the small hours. Flights to the Gulf, to Europe via Addis or Nairobi, to Johannesburg — the departures board at Entebbe International between four and eight in the morning is where most visitors' trips end. Which means the last night of a Uganda trip is a logistical question rather than a hospitality one: where do you sleep so that leaving at half past two is manageable rather than miserable?

This guide answers that properly, because the usual answer — "stay next to the airport" — is right less often than people assume.

First, the arithmetic

Work backwards from your departure time.

Be at the terminal three hours before an international departure. Entebbe is not a large airport but it screens twice: once at a vehicle checkpoint on the perimeter, and again at the terminal entrance. Neither takes long at four in the morning, but both are why three hours is sensible rather than paranoid.

Add the drive. From Kigo that is 20 km, almost entirely on the Entebbe Express Highway, which at that hour is close to empty. Twenty-five to thirty minutes is realistic. From Entebbe town it is ten to fifteen.

Add ten minutes for the leaving itself — the bag that will not close, the key handover, the driver reversing out of the gate.

So for a 06:00 departure: at the terminal by 03:00, leave the property at about 02:20 from Kigo, or about 02:35 from Entebbe town.

For an 08:00 departure: at the terminal by 05:00, leave at about 04:20 from Kigo.

That fifteen-minute difference between Kigo and Entebbe town is the entire proximity advantage people base the decision on. It is worth having in front of you before you let it decide the whole stay.

The case for Entebbe town

Be fair to it. If your trip ends with a flight and nothing else — you are coming off a safari, you have no business in Kampala, you want the shortest possible drive — Entebbe town is the right answer and there are guest houses and hotels there built entirely around this one job. Many run their own airport shuttle. Several will serve breakfast at four in the morning without being asked twice.

What you give up is everything else. Entebbe is a small lakeside town; it is pleasant and it is not Kampala. If your last day has a meeting in the city, a lunch in Kololo, or anything at all to do before the flight, you will spend an hour getting there and an hour getting back, and the fifteen minutes you saved in the morning will have cost you two hours in the afternoon.

The case for Kigo

Kigo sits between the two. It is on the Entebbe Express Highway corridor, 20 km from the terminal and roughly 25 minutes from central Kampala, which means the last day of a trip can contain an actual day.

The traffic direction works in your favour at both ends. You leave Kigo for the city in the morning as everybody else is driving in. You come back in the evening against the flow. And the run to the airport at the end is one road, in the dark, with nothing on it.

For a business trip, this is usually the decisive point: you can hold meetings until five on your last day, have dinner at a reasonable hour, sleep, and leave at half past two, without the day being structured around the airport.

What to ask a property before you book the last night

This is the part most guides leave out, and it is where the difference between a smooth departure and a bad one actually lives. Ask these six things of anywhere you are considering, including us.

1. Is there someone awake at two in the morning? Not "is there a night watchman" — is there someone who can answer a phone, open a gate, find a car, and deal with a problem. At HMK Living there is a 24/7 concierge; at a small guest house there may not be.

2. Do I keep the room until I leave, or must I check out the day before? The answer should be that you keep it. A 02:30 departure is a late check-out in the dark, not a separate booking. Get this in writing when you book, because being asked to vacate at 11:00 and sit in a lobby for fifteen hours is a genuinely common failure.

3. Will you arrange the transfer, with a named driver, confirmed the night before? The confirmation is the point. A property that says "we'll sort it in the morning" is telling you something.

4. Can I have breakfast, or something to take? If you are leaving before the kitchen opens, a packed breakfast the night before is the civilised answer. Ask explicitly — many places will do it and few will offer.

5. What happens if the flight is cancelled after I have left? The answer you want is "call us and we will reopen the apartment if it is free, and find you something if it is not." This is a real risk on this route and it is worth knowing the plan.

6. Can I pay the night before? Settling at 02:15 while the driver waits is a bad time to discover the card machine is down.

A worked version of the last day

Here is how the last 24 hours actually run for a guest leaving Kigo on a 06:00 flight — not because it is the only way, but because having it written down makes the shape obvious.

Previous morning. Breakfast downstairs, included. Driver arranged through the concierge for meetings in the city, who also takes the flight number and books the transfer for 02:20.

Afternoon. Back by five, against the traffic. Laundry sent in the morning comes back, which is the small luxury that makes packing a ten-minute job rather than an hour of damp-clothes triage.

Evening. Dinner downstairs or cooked in the apartment. Bill settled. Packed breakfast ordered for the morning.

02:10. Concierge calls the apartment. Driver is at the gate, same name confirmed the night before.

02:20. Leave. The expressway is empty.

02:50. Perimeter check, then the terminal.

03:00. Checked in, three hours before departure, with a packed breakfast and nothing left to arrange.

You keep the apartment until you walk out of it — a 02:30 departure is a late check-out that happens to be in the dark.

Arriving late is the same problem backwards

Most of this applies in reverse. Flights into Entebbe frequently land after ten at night, and the two things that make a late arrival painless are the same two that make a dawn departure painless: a driver who was told your flight number and is watching the flight, and someone awake at the property when you get there.

Do not accept an unsolicited offer of a lift in the arrivals hall. Arrange the transfer in advance, confirm the driver's name and vehicle before you fly, and give the driver the road — Kigo Road — rather than only the property name. The road is the landmark drivers know.

If your flight is delayed, a driver who is watching the flight is still there at one in the morning. A driver who was booked for a time is not.

Arriving at midnight should be unremarkable. It is, if the gate and the concierge are expecting you.

So: Entebbe town or Kigo?

Stay in Entebbe town if the flight is the only thing left in the trip, you are coming off a safari or a lake trip, and you want the shortest possible drive at the shortest possible notice.

Stay in Kigo if your last day still has a day in it — meetings in Kampala, a final lunch, work to finish — or if you simply want the last night of the trip to be somewhere you would have chosen anyway rather than somewhere chosen by a runway.

The fifteen minutes is real. It is just rarely worth what people pay for it.

Tell us your flight number when you book and the concierge takes it from there: the car, the time, the packed breakfast, and the apartment kept until you walk out of it.

Common questions about this topic.

Plan to be at the terminal three hours before an international departure. From Kigo that means leaving about three hours and forty minutes before take-off: roughly 30 minutes on the road at that hour, plus the security screening at the airport perimeter before you reach the terminal building. For a 06:00 departure, a 02:20 departure from the property is comfortable rather than tight.
